Stockport Virtual School commissioned Me, Myself and I (MMI) in September 2015 to work with young people in KS2.  Since that time we have worked closely with Donna Higgins to develop a bespoke programme to improve educational attainment, self-esteem, resilience and motivation of children in care.

The programme MMI has contributed to an observable difference in educational attainment and self-awareness, with positive feedback from schools, young people, carers and social workers. This positive impact influenced our decision to extend the programme to  include KS3 and KS4.

Donna is committed to reducing barriers that looked after children face in their lives by introducing creative experiences that help young people to face their fear, inspires their learning and challenges their negative thoughts about themselves. This early intervention model builds upon expectation and aspiration, challenging mis-informed ideals and helping young people to form realistic and achievable goals for the future.

Stockport Virtual School have invested in Me, Myself and I long term due to the positive measurable outcomes we have seen year to year in the young people's attainment, attitude to learning and behaviour. Donna is creative, imaginative and well organised and  I would have no hesitation in recommending this programme to other local authorities and services supporting young people in care.

After 5 years of involvement with  Donna Higgins’ Me, Myself and I programme I was very pleased to hear that  Donna was announcing an extension to her offer – Younger Generation Can! The programme is a bespoke mentoring scheme that offers and allows our Looked After Children an opportunity to explore target setting, to talk about ambitions and aspirations and very importantly it gives them a forum to discuss any areas of concern raised by the young people themselves.

The mentors have proved themselves to have a great understanding and knowledge of the kind of issues that may be raised by the young people. They have been able to develop honest and trusting professional  relationships. They are tenacious and they don’t give up! On many occasions, through speaking to their young people, they have been able to address worries and concerns or when appropriate have passed these on so that they can be addressed. Young Generation Can really has given a voice to the young people who have been involved.

I have been very impressed with young Generation Can and would definitely recommend it to other services supporting young people.
